Former Fort Worth Cat and Weatherford High School baseball player Zach Britton made a special appearance at Thursday's Weatherford ISD Board meeting following the official retiring of his No. 12 high school jersey earlier in the evening at the Baseball Booster Club's kick-off dinner. Britton, who graduated from WHS in 2006, is the first baseball athlete from Weatherford to pitch in the major leagues. As a rookie pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, Britton pitched 154.1 innings, collected an 11-11 record, and had a 4.61 ERA during his rookie season. Colton Brewer signs with Pirates Round 4: Colton Brewer RHP 6’4 190 Canton HS 2011 Graduate, Canton TX "The Pirates dip back into the state of Texas to pick another high school player, this time righthander Colton Brewer. Brewer is a raw pitcher who could be a project for the Bucs. He’s committed to Weatherford JC in Texas but that shouldn’t be a huge obstacle when it comes to getting him signed. He has good size and a projectable frame so that is something they have to work with. I’ve always felt you can’t go wrong when it comes to signing Texas HS arms so we’ll have to wait a few years to see how Brewer develops." Hunter Pence to Phillies (Arlington HS, Texarkana JC, UT Arlington) Former Fort Worth Cat, Hunter Pence, was traded to the Phillies, and the next day against the Pirates, banged out a single and proceeded to hit in each of his first eight games with his new club. "They've embraced me," Pence says. "Unbelievable teammates. People taking care of you in the front office. The staff. "There's a lot to learn. And I think the coolest thing about it is, there are MVPs in this clubhouse, Cy Youngs ... there's a lot to take from." And Hunter has so much to give; in the Phillies' first 10 games with Pence hitting behind him in the lineup, Ryan Howard is hitting .308 (12 for 39) with six doubles, four homers and 11 RBI. When Pence arrived, Howard was hitting .246. (For the season, he's at .252.) "I don't feel any pressure," Pence says. "At this level, you have to perform. I understand how to prepare. I understand the process." Who We Are.... The Fort Worth Cats baseball club is a select baseball team comprised of 15-18 year olds who yearn to play at the next level. Since their inception in 1989 every senior player that has wanted to play baseball at the next level has been awarded a scholarship offer. Founder Jay Meadows, who ran the team from 1989 through the fall of 1995, has had all of his players - that's 100% - given scholarship offers to play baseball at the next level. After the fall of 1995, Jay decided it was time for a break so that he and his wife, Toni, could start up their family. In 1999, with Jay's permission, the Fort Worth Cats were brought back by myself,Bruce Kirby. As an assistant coach for Jay, (1993-1995) I realized what a special program this was and what a wonderful goal he had in mind: to help further the education of these kids through athletics. Now, as we are looking forward to the summer of 2010, we are working hard to make sure we stay at the level that Jay left this program. We are well on our way as we once again made sure that all 23 of our senior players from last summer, who wanted to play at the next level, are now attending college on a scholarship they were offered by the institution. Congrats to the Cats 15u!!! Congrats to our 2011 Fort Worth Cats 15u team for a great summer. They placed 3rd in the Premier Freshman Nationals, beating teams along the way such as the South Texas Sliders (twice), North Texas Titans, Houston Mizuno Select, Waco Storm, Austin Slam, and North Texas Hardball before losing in the semi-finals to the Indiana Bulls. They won the Texas Premier 15u State Championship (PICTURE) beating the West Columbia Angels in the championship game, 4-3. They won the AABC 15u State Championship. They then moved on to the AABC World Series where they ended up finishing in 3rd place. Congrats to coaches (Brian Reagan/Rick Gustafson), players, and parents alike!!!
